Social Studies - Mr. Hardy

Welcome to 8th Grade!

Greetings 8th grade students and families! My name is Andrew Hardy; and it is my distinct pleasure to serve as your Social Studies teacher for your final year at Normal Park Museum Magnet. Clearly, the 2020-21 school year is going to be an exercise in patience and flexibility. We are certainly embarking on a strange journey together, but who doesn't want a little adventure? Even in the midst of a pandemic, a presidential election year, and mass social and political protests...life goes on (and history homework is due).

Within my 8th grade Social Studies course, students will study the beginnings of Colonial English and American history. This includes culture, religion, geography, government, etc. You know. The hits. We will work together to research and analyze our complex national story, and complete our journey in 1870s with our unit on American Reconstruction after the Civil War. Students will focus on improving their writing, research, problem solving, and debate skills through exploration of a variety political and social lenses. Hopefully, you'll leave class with many debate opportunities to carry on at home. I am truly looking forward to a year of building new relationships with you all, so please be sure to reach out to me should you have any questions or concerns.

About Me:

I graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in History and a Master's degree in Education, but I don't enjoy acknowledging their travesty of a football program. Though I have been in the classroom full time since 2011, this will be my fifth year serving as part of the Normal Park faculty. Outside of the classroom, you'll certainly find me enjoying the outdoor perks that Chattanooga life has to offer. I often bike along the river, hike Signal Mountain, or hang out with a book in my hammock in the park. Generally, my dog, Murphy, is along for the ride. Be sure to say hello! In addition, I love to talk about podcasts, board games, cooking, and travel. I will thank you in advance for indulging me in my strong opinions about such! Please let me know about your new hobbies and obsessions, because I am always on the look out for exciting culture recommendations. Cheers to the good times this school year!
