Dance Grades 6-8

In our dance classes at Normal Park we use a curriculum called Speaking Through Dance created by Carolyn Dorfman. In 4th and 5th grade we explore what it is to be a choreographer, a person who makes a dance. By using our choreographers toolbox students explore space, time and dynamics to tell a story through movement. In 6th, 7th and 8th grade, we introduce hip hop, ballet, modern and contemporary dance technique. We also offer a day of wellness every other week where we learn how to take car of our mind and body through meditation, yoga and pilates exploration.

4th-8th grade dance: Marah Bates received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Theatre-Dance Performance from Illinois State University in 2016. In 2017 she completed her 200hr-RYT Yoga Certification at Asheville Yoga Center. She danced professionally in Nashville TN and most recently for The Pop Up Project from 2019-2023. Marah is currently the Director of Program Operations for The Pop Up Project, a Dance Education Non Profit bringing the JOY of dance to Chattanoogans of all ages! She loves to read, play with her cats and spend time outdoors with her spouse and friends.

7th and 8th grade wellness: Jess Ortega holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from Middle Tennessee State University, with a specialization in pedagogical theory.  She currently teaches with The Pop Up Project and ProjectDance.  Jess is interested in many movement modalities, having been trained extensively in ballet, modern dance, yoga and Noyes Rhythm. She incorporates elements of these styles into her teaching and choreographic practices. In her instruction, jess works to contextualize movement for students, situating technique in history and influence.

7th and 8th grade Hip Hop: Ryan Roberts found his love of Hip Hop dance at the age of 9 years old and has been dancing ever since. Ryan began his training at WEAVE: A conceptual Dance Company and is an original member of The Pop Up Project’s performance group. He has taught at various studios and schools around Hamilton County including Chattanooga Ballet, Modern Play, Divine Dance Studio, Baylor School, Girls Preparatory School, Chattanooga High Center of Creative Arts and Studio 34. He is currently performing at The Playlist downtown and will be a participant in Dare to Dance again this year!
